Olomana School Vocational Project – Thank you Metro! June 3, 2010
Metro Rotary’s Vocational Service Committee established a relationship with the Olomana School during this Rotary year through the efforts of committee member Dan Kim. Coordinated by Dan and Olomana teacher Debbie Heyler, Metro Rotary funded the purchase of T-shirts for the schools screening project. The project taught the participating students the process of designing, laying out, transferring and producing T-shirts with personalized images and statements. While learning a new skill, the students also learn to work together while producing a tangible product of their own design.
Olomana School provides secondary education for boys who have come to the program either as a result of the criminal justice system or due to being removed from other public high schools. Efforts such as the T-shirt Screening Project provide vocational training, introduce the students to teamwork and result in a finished product that instills pride in the individual participants.
The Vocational Service Committee is in the process of meeting with Ms Heyler to discuss possible projects for the upcoming new Rotary year. If you are interested in participating in upcoming Vocational Service projects, please speak with Bob Ritchie, Dan Kim or Brian Bennett during a future Rotary meeting.
