February 11 Meeting Recap:
Thank you very much for agreeing to be part of the International Service Committee at Metro. I’m truly pleased that the level of interest this committee has drawn such a great group of people. I endeavor to keep you as engaged in international service as I can without becoming burdensome.
Following the agenda that was posted in the Mynah we accomplished several items this month:
● Computer Lab in Mexico: Was officially dedicated on 1/29/10 and we are due to receive pictures and a project report from RC Tehuacan Manantiales in Puebla, Mexico. Approved on 1/8/09 this project has taken a year to complete, Metro contributed $3,286 and D5000 matched that amount towards the $17,000 project. When the report and pictures are received, we will update the club members in both the Mynah and on our website. This was the last matching grant international service participated in.
Follow up action: Hal will coordinate to receive the pictures and report, Eric will enter into club publications
● Water Catchment project in Rwanda: Metro recently submitted our contribution of $1,620 toward the $18,485 project. Because no TRF funds were available this year for matching grants, wider club participation was required and D5000 matched the contributions of several Hawaii clubs to be able to execute the project. Funds are in route to RC Butare, Rwanda and we expect regular reports on their progress with the water catchment system. Initial reports are that because of the ability of the school and RC Butare, L’Ecole school has been designated as a candidate for the “one laptop per child” campaign spear headed by former U.S. Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte.
Follow up action: Hal will continue to receive updates, Eric will enter into club publications
● Opportunities to collaborate with EFPI to expand internationally: Hal Darcey updated the group on EFPI’s expansion plans beyond Future Light Orphanage in Cambodia to the Philippines and Indonesia. Work is in various stages with newly identified orphanages and Hal will also be evaluating orphanages in Thailand. Specific opportunities for Metro’s international service are not specifically clear at this time but there is a large interest and one option may be for Metro to adopt an orphanage and members or their designees can begin communicating.
Follow up action: Hal will update the committee as new orphanages come on line, Eric will work with other committee members to identify a possible project.
● D5000 International Relief Fund: We broached the idea of the committee’s support for the district fund. Experience has shown us that when disasters occur, our membership is willing to contribute to relief efforts personally. While this is acknowledged and valued, it may also be an indicator that there is interest in a higher level of participation, be it fund raising or some other form of assistance. Comments and suggestions were received by Hal, Jim, Lora and Mike indicating the interest is there but shouldn’t compete with our previously scheduled fund raising activity which is acknowledged. Use of Shelter box was supported in many ways as a target to generate interest and provide a financial target.
Follow up action: Eric will begin dialogue with district level fund manager and work with Lora to identify an opportunity for members to see a shelter box and target a campaign.
● Around the room for ideas: Tom recommended review of the dictionary distribution program and if further distribution is required, that the committee review opportunities to do so. Eric will follow up with Roz on status of books available.
Leilani recommended a fund raising campaign and has followed up with her offer; as it targets Metro foundation, the matter is referred to Tom and Peter for handling. Thank you!
Gordon requests Biblical story books for use in applied English courses in China; his intent is to make a personal connection between the donor and student. Lora will announce at next meeting and it will continue to be posted in the Mynah.
● Budget recap: The International Service Committee budget for RY09/10 is $3500; $1620 was spent; there are currently no projects for consideration before the committee.
Unless an outstanding project comes to light the committee’s direction for the next four months will be to identify a potential matching grant to support for RY 10/11 and use our coordination effort this year to prepare that project for immediate execution in July and have that project carry the committee for next year.
Committee Snap Shot: February 2010
Goal for RY 09/10: Identify a matching grant opportunity for immediate execution in RY 10/11
Current Projects: Computer lab in Mexico; Water catchment system in Rwanda
Current Project Proposals: None tabled
Current Project Ideas:

- D5000 Relief Fund Support
- Dictionary Distribution program
